My name is Tomi Williams; and I have been fortunate enough to be selected by you, my peers, as the Student Member of t he Board of Education for the 2011-2012 school year.
As Student Member of the Board, it will be my responsibility to act as a liaison between the students of Howard County and the adults of the Howard County Public School System. Effective communication with my fellow students will be essential to my success in this position.
There are a lot of goals that I hope to accomplish as the Student Member, but one that I am very passionate about achieving is getting more student involved. The point of the Student Member should not only be ceremonial, the Student Member acts as a bridge between the students and adults of the Howard County Public School System. I plan to get more students to be interested in the matters of the Board of Education, because so many of the issues that we as students complain about are being decided by the Board of Education and so many of the things that we about our schools love are being maintained by the Board. We can only get what we want, what we believe in, if we make our voices heard.
If I do nothing else as the Student Member, I want to let my fellow students know that they have a voice in their local government, especially the Board of Education, because the point of the Board of Education is to serve the students and if we are not active in the process then we will have no control over what or how we are being served.
In order for me to fulfill the obligations of this position, I need your questions, concerns and feedback. It is my responsibility to represent my fellow students on the Board and I can only do this effectively if I can establish new and innovative ways of increasing the amount of communication and improving the methods of communication with HCPSS students already in place. Please never hesitate to get in contact with me and share your ideas!

In light of our most recent HCASC meeting that focused on leadership opportunities in the area, I thought that with such an overload of information about so many different opportunities our county has to offer, it would be helpful to chronicle it all on one spot! For anyone who didn't quite catch something, or if you couldn't make it to the meeting, below is a summary of some upcoming dates and opportunities to mark on your calendar:
-
Maryland Leadership Workshop-
-
Leadership U provides an excellent opportunity for high school students to learn new skills in effective leadership, hone old ones, network, and serve the community
-
Open to all sophomores
-
A parent information session will be held on February 28, 2011 at Hammond High School
-
For more information, visit http://leadershiphc.org/LHC/Leadership_U.aspx
-
A directory of services information booklet was distributed at Wednesday's HCASC meeting. This booklet is a great source for finding volunteer and job opportunities around the county, and contains alphabetized contact information about a variety of different organizations that are always looking for eager help!

This holiday season, the River Hill community is participating in a unique Adopt-A-Family program where parents and students ”friend” needy families in the Newcomer program, a magnet program where students come from all over the county to learn English. They are providing the necessities requested by some of these families. Various clubs and all of the SGA class councils donated to make this holiday season better for those in need. |

On Thursday, November 4, the Howard County Association of Student Councils partnered with the Board of Education to host a very successful student leader luncheon.
Over 60 students from 12 high schools spent the morning learning from Maryland Leadership Workshops how to best advocate for causes they were passionate about, identify key adults in their schools who can help, and got a chance to come up with action plans that they can implement in their schools using what they learned.
In the afternoon, student leaders met with Board of Education members and Central Office staff to help provide a student perspective on current issues within the school system.
Overall, the day was very successful, and HCASC would like to thank all of the dedicated students and supportive staff members that made it possible!
Pictures of this successful event can be found here. |
